DAY 5 : 3 MARCH 2011 : KENTON-ON-SEA (BUSHMAN’S RIVER MOUTH CAMPING GROUND)

Dave took us on a tour of the Alexandria area where he grew up.   He and his mother lived with his grandparents in Alexandria where his grandfather, Dr Pascoe Grenfell, was the doctor for the whole area.   Dave used to travel around with this grandfather when he visited patients and got to know the area very well.   He tells some wonderful stories about this time.
We went through Boknes and Cannon Rocks and eventually went into the coastal part of the Addo National Park.   Unfortunately it was a grey day and the mist at times was down to the ground.   We apparently drove through some wonderful sand dune beds but we didn’t see any sign of them.   There are a lot of dairy farmers in this area as well, with all the lands that used to be cultivated to chicory now pastures for the cattle.
Then we went through the Woody Cape area (also in Addo) where the trees were fantastic – huge yellow woods, erythrinas, etc.
Alexandria was full of people, a very busy little town but very dirty, and Dave took us around to see the house he grew up in, the house that his Uncle Moe(his mother’s brother who was a doctor in the practice) and the surgery -  all very run down now.   We then drove through an area which is a huge game farm in the Kariega River Valley.   We managed to have a bite to eat for lunch before the heavens opened and it started pouring.   In between the rain drops we saw quite a bit of game – rhino, giraffe, ostriches, water buck, wildebeest, and impala.  Despite the rain it was a very interesting drive.
Dinner was at the Steyn’s – fish and chips – a fish caught by Dave a couple of days before we arrived and saved specially for us.
